Findings Summary
This study assessed the efficacy of a tailored, bilingual, interactive multimedia breast cancer education intervention designed for low-income, low literacy Latinas and delivered through touch screen kiosks at six different clinical settings. It examined whether the technology-based intervention was acceptable to the intended audience, and assessed changes in breast cancer knowledge, attitudes and screening behavior. The study population encompassed 1,197 Latina women ages 40 to 65; the majority were foreign-born, had less than eight years of education and a weekly household income below $350.00. Participants were randomly assigned to a control or intervention condition. The control group served as the baseline against which post-exposure changes in breast cancer knowledge, attitude and mammography screening of the intervention group were assessed. Data were collected through questionnaires and oral interviews with participants. The intervention group exhibited higher knowledge and attitude change scores than the control group (Chi sq., p=<. 0001). Four months after exposure, 51% of non-adherent women obtained a mammogram—a dramatic health outcome. This robust effect size demonstrates that this intervention overcame screening barriers and significantly increased mammogram screening behavior. It also suggests that well-designed, multilingual and multicultural eHealth applications can be effectively leveraged to reduce health disparities among medically underserved populations.

Learning Objective 1
The learner will be aware of the features of a breast cancer education intervention.

Learning Objective 2
The learner will become familiar with the design of the intervention and its eHealth features.

Learning Objective 3
The learner will become familiar with the study conducted that demonstrated the efficacy of the eHealth intervention.
